April - Culture & Enterprise

The government is drawing together enterprise and culture - this is an encouraging step forward and underpins the very nature of Arts in Social Contexts.  The need to create a practical cultural framework that hepls community development is now more important than ever.  I attended a mind mapping excercise for the community of Tarbert conducted by Jim Mather MSP which highlighted this opportunity and the need for an economic impact study will be needed to provide a solution.

January - Project Confirmation

RSAMD
is delighted that Peter Minshall has been seconded to both Culture & Sport Glasgow (CSG) and Argyll & Bute Council for projects one and two of the new MA Arts in Social Contexts degree course.

Peter will be tracking and evaluating CSG's planned cultural mapping programme between January and April 2008 and will be conducting a comparative rural exercise in Argyll and Bute.

The plan is that project three will be a seminar bringing together and illustrating the findings of the cultural comparative study.  The aim is to help the Government's cultural aspirations and lead to stronger cultural development opportunities.

March - Cultural Research

The recent Cultural Summit in Edinburgh has received interesting feedback.  There is evidently a need to look carefully at and revisit the language used in Arts and Culture in order to explore options for mainstreaming Culture in Scotland.

May - Brokering the Cultural Link September Presentation at RSAMD

June - Rural Cultural Study Argyll & VAS Art of Conversation Presentation

I have now expedited my first field project in which I was able to conduct a really worthwhile cultural study workshop in Campbeltown.  The study was a qualitative discussion with an enthusisatic cross section of the regeneration community about the use of language, jargon and bureaucracy.  The results will be evaluated and published on this website in due course - my thanks to Argyll & Bute Council Community Services for providing great help in allowing me to plan and execute this important part of the degree.

Voluntary Arts Scotland asked me to give a presentation during their Art of Conversation conference at the Lighthouse in Glasgow;  the guest speaker was the Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture.  I was asked to be challenging and so I developed a successful theme around the present use of language in arts and culture and its effects on regeneration and community development.

September Cultural Presentation

July - Short Break followed by City Cultural Study

On 22nd July my city based cultural study will take place at CSG and will compare findings against the Campbeltown workshop

August - Preparations for September presentation

My city based cultural workshop was well attended and by all accounts a great success; teasing out some valuable structural issues, not least the burgeoning question of the use of language within arts and culture
